What Jamie Oliver doesn’t get about breastfeeding

Jamie Oliver just couldn’t work out why all new mums won’t simply breastfeed.

“Probably the most upsetting thing for me at the moment, and I’m desperately trying to scrabble around to get more information on it, [is] breastfeeding,” the celebrity chef said on the UK’s LBC radio last week.

According to Jamie, who, I think we can safely assume has never lactated in his life, breastfeeding is “easy”, “convenient”, “better” and “free” and he’s baffled that more women aren’t doing it.

Aren’t Mums These Days silly? Coughing up all that unnecessary cash for formula, wasting our time sterilising bottles, sabotaging the mother-baby bond, reducing junior’s IQ points or whatever this week’s shock horror finding is — when all we have to do is turn on our milk taps and everything will be lovely-jubbly-pukka. Or something.

Either we’re really stupid for not taking the free and easy breastfeeding option, or we just don’t love our children as much as Jamie loves his. If only there’d been a man available to tell us what to do with our bodies before now.
