‘Plain women pick the briefcase and career over baby, controversial study claims’, screamed the Daily Telegraph headline.
The headline was followed by helpful dot points apparently summarising the researchers’ findings: ‘Plainer women choose careers over babies — study’ and ‘More unattractive women “fear not finding a husband”’.
It’s the perfect story for any tabloid editor hungry for web traffic. What better way to increase email articles, tweets, likes and comments than boffins proving that ugly chicks climb the corporate ladder because they can’t get a bloke?
There’s just one problem: the ‘controversial study’ at the centre of Telegraph’s story wasn’t really about the attractiveness of women at all. It was really about the lack of marriageable men.
